Windshield Repair: What Are the Benefits?

Even though we all try our best to avoid it, it somehow seems to happen more than we would like. Somehow finding ourselves driving down the highway behind a semi truck or dump truck and no way around it. We realize the bad place we are positioned as we hear the little rocks hitting our car and windshield, and then we begin making a plan to move. However sometimes those little rocks can do a lot of damage before we can move, leaving our windshields cracked or chipped. Now what do you do?

Well, your choices are to replace the whole windshield, repair the crack or chip, or do nothing.

Replacing your whole windshield is an option. However it will likely cost you quite a bit of money. Unless you have tons of extra money lying around this would not be a solution for you. Even if you do there are other things to consider. Replacing the entire windshield will take more time as well. So unless you really have to replace the whole windshield you should try to get it repaired.

The best option is to get your windshield repaired. This is a process that involves technology and skill to fill a damaged area on the windshield with a special transparent resin. It is advised that you find a qualified professional to handle your windshield repairs. This process usually only takes about 30 minutes to have done, which is great for the world filled with busy schedules. Also with the process the strength of your windshield is fully restored and it is about impossible to know that any work has even been done on the windshield. In most cases your insurance will help with the payment since it is saving them money from having to replace your whole windshield. Another added benefit of repairing your windshield is that it is keeping a large amount of glass out of our landfills. Bet you didn’t know that 10% of our landfills is made up of glass! Windshields are not usually recycled due to laminate on them. As you can see there are many benefits personally and globally to getting your windshield repaired instead of replaced. One thing to remember is that your windshield should be repaired as quickly as possible for optimum results.

Doing nothing is not a good choice at all. It is unsafe to drive with your windshield in that condition. It can be deadly if it bursts on its own or if you are sadly involved in a car accident. Also waiting too long to repair it could result in more costs and frustrations for you. This is because the longer you wait to repair a crack or chip, the longer that chip or crack has time to accumulate debris in it. This makes it harder and sometimes impossible to repair.

So, don’t wait if you windshield is in need of repair. Take it to a trustworthy shop that can repair your crack or chip quickly and safely! It will save you time and money, two very valuable things!

Buy replacement windows – replacement windows

How to Shop for a Good Quality Replacement Window
When shopping for a good quality replacement window, one rule that will never change when buying things is that you get what you pay for. While a person can overpay for a high quality window, they will still own a high quality window. If you overpay for a builder grade window, it may fail quickly and you will not only own a builder grade window, but may have to replace it. Take careful note of what you want from your window purchase and find a window manufacturer that makes what you want. There are a lot of options in the market place.

Visual beauty can be very important to some people. The best looking replacement windows will have the same size frame all the way around the perimeter (for horizontal sliding designs especially). Many of the less attractive replacement windows have the front, left, and top sides of the frame wide, while the bottom is narrow. A quality replacement window with a beveled frame will look better than a basic box frame (which is the cheapest).

Sliding windows which have screens that remove to the inside are more attractive than the old fashioned designs, whereby the screens are removed to the outside leaving the open track to gather dust and debris. A good quality replacement window will offer superior performance ratings. It should feature a “U” Value of .30 or less for cold weather and a SHGC of .30 or less to keep the heat out in the summer.

Replacement Windows and the energy tax credit
A replacement window that meets the above criteria would qualify for Obama’s 2009-2010 Energy Tax Credit (for full details, visit the Department of Energy’s website). Most energy star rated windows on the market over the past few years will not meet this tough standard for the rebate. A replacement window that meets these specifications will offer tremendous summer and winter comfort and save you money on heating and cooling bills.

Replacement Windows of high quality have good seals
A good quality replacement window should have a “super spacer” type seal (multiple part seal system), or the good window ratings you get day one may fade away quickly as the gas leaks out between the glass panes. Many companies promote metal seal systems and come up with lots of fancy names for them, but in my experience, none of them are made to last. The intercept spacer (raw untreated steel bent in a “U” profile) was originally introduced to transport glass over mountain passes.

The “U” design bends inward, so as the air gets thinner going over a mountain pass and the glass flexes inward, the seals do not fail as often as a rigid box metal spacer. Additionally, it is quick and very cheap to manufacture.

Replacement Windows of high quality are multi-chambered
A quality replacement window (vinyl) frame should be multi-chambered. A general rule is that the fewer the chambers, the cheaper and weaker the window frame. Foam in a frame adds a bit of additional insulating value, but is not a substitute for multiple chambers as it adds nothing in terms of structural value. It is far cheaper for a window manufacturer to add some foam inserts to a weak frame than to build a multiple chambered window. A structural, multi-chambered window is harder and more expensive to manufacture.

A side note on how vinyl frame extrusions are made (the process is similar to the old Play Dough toys): Vinyl pellets are gravity fed into what appears to be a huge auger-fed meat grinder. The high pressure created when the pellets are compressed melts the vinyl, which is then pushed through a series of metal dies. Each machined metal die is more precise than the preceding one until a nice even vinyl extrusion emerges. This vinyl extrusion is then floated out onto a long water trough to cool and cut into sections. The more complex the extrusion dies are, the more costly they are to manufacture and maintain and the more complex the extrusion, the greater the amount of vinyl material required to manufacture it.

The best replacement windows will have multiple chambers with foam inserts. In a wet area like the Northwest, it is not a bad idea to have a frame design that is sloped internally for water drainage. A window frame with a sloped internal drainage plane and foam chambering on all four sides is being developed to meet the special needs of the wet Pacific Northwest area. A sloped surface drains quicker than a flat one. A window with a thick outer wall is good also because a lot of the weight of the glass can be placed on the outer wall of a vinyl frame. An 80 mil. double strength outer wall is a nice option for long term stability and strength if a window is installed without a nailing flange. Finally, the actual vinyl material should be virgin vinyl. Vinyl can be recycled, which is good for the environment, but it can also be combined (diluted) with materials like chalk, which causes problems over time.

Replacement Windows of high quality are fusion welded
A good quality replacement window will feature fusion welded corners. Welders range in cost from a couple hundred dollars to a million dollars or more. The million dollar welder does things the cheaper welders cannot do. Hydraulics simultaneously line up all four corners precisely and the automated welder welds through the entire frame, effectively welding the internal chambers as well. This type of structural welder increases the longevity and strength of the window. Regular welders often only weld the outer edges that you see, not the internal structure.

A good quality replacement window will offer features not found in builder grade windows. Some popular features include: “invisible” screens for homes with a view, removable window tracks for easy cleaning, multi lock systems such as 4 point locks on sliding doors, self cleaning glass, a performance rating like the one listed above, covered weep holes to keep out bugs and wind, stainless hardware where needed (such as near salt water), and tilt options where applicable (note: some tilt ins will not have a high performance rating because the exposed tracks tend to let wind through, which hurts the “U” Value ratings in the simulation testing).

Edge Spacers
Energy efficient windows often employ super spacers having “warm edge technology”. (Spacers refer to the material used to keep the two panes of glass apart while also providing an air tight seal.) “Super Spacers” keep the windows warmer around the edges where condensation often occurs. By eliminating aluminum which transmits heat rapidly (1416 BTU’s per hour) and replacing it with a foam insulator, dramatic improvements are made, both in energy performance and in reducing condensation along the glass perimeter.

The best windows use less conductive materials such as foam and rubber. Some companies employ a double sealing technique whereby the foam seal is used to provide the highest insulating value and then a secondary rubber or polymer sealant is applied over that to prevent gas escaping and seals from breaking. Warm edge spacers can improve the U-value of a window by 10% and boost the edge temperature, thereby reducing condensation.

Replacement Windows of high quality have good warranties
A good quality replacement window will have an excellent warranty. The rule here is that the big print giveth, while the small print taketh away. A comparison of window manufacturers’ warranties will give you a good idea of how long the manufacturer believes their windows will last and what will fail. Warranties vary widely. I hope this article offers an insight into what components go into making a good quality replacement window. The next challenge is finding a company that does quality installations.

How Many Times Can You Do Auto Windshield Repair?

However, it is important to remember that a windshield is still just like any other part on a car, and there comes a time when windshield chip repairs might no longer be a viable option. It’s a lot like patching a pair of jeans so many times that you can no longer tell what is part of the original fabric and what is a repair sewing job. In the same way, if you keep your vehicle for longer than just a few years, you may have to eventually consider entire windshield replacement.

The good news is, your auto windshield repair professional should be able to give you a good estimate of how viable windshield chip repair is for your particular situation. In most cases, you should be able to repair several chips at one time or even over time, depending on your situation. That’s because quality windshield chip repair is meant to restore the structural integrity and optical clarity of the auto glass.

• The process of windshield chip repair reinforces the original factory seal, so your windshield remains strong and safe.

• Auto windshield repair professionals use a specialty resin that mimics the light reflecting properties and strength of glass, so your vision won’t be impaired.

• The risks of existing crack or enlarged chip is completely eliminated once your windshield chip is repaired.

With such great results, you can make several worry-free windshield chip repairs over the life of your car. However, excessive damage in the form of windshield cracks or or chips that are larger than a quarter or chips that fall too closely to previously repaired damages might be better served by entire windshield replacement. After all, cracks and chips tend to reach out for one another, and several small problems can quickly add up to one large problem.

If you are concerned about several windshield chips that are close together or you feel your vehicle’s glass has been repaired too many times for safety, talk with your trusted windshield repair professional. He or she should be able to return your windshield to safety or recommend a windshield replacement.

Four Misconceptions About Replacement Windows

There are many misconceptions that homeowners have about replacement windows that can keep them from choosing to replace their windows. The four misconceptions below touch on a few (but major) issues that are commonly brought up by people hesitant to replace their windows. By dispelling these misconceptions about replacement windows, homeowners will feel more comfortable making the decision to start a window replacement project.

<b>1. U-value is the most important factor to determine energy efficient window</b>
U-value is defined as the measurement of the amount of heat transfer through the window. The lower the U-value, the less heat is transferred across the window. While it is a good measure for the window, the U-value is only one factor used to determine the energy performance of a window. Other measures like the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and the visible light transmittance are also used to determine the performance of the window. In addition, the climate you live in will also determine how important U-value is to your situation.

If you live in a colder climate you will want the lowest U-value you can find. A low U-value means that the heat inside the house will stay inside. However, if you live in a warmer climate, the solar heat gain coefficient is more important because it measures how much of the sun’s radiant heat is transferred across the window. The lower the SHGC the better the window is in a warmer climate.

In a colder climate you want to try and capture as much of the sun’s radiant heat as you can so a better SHGC number is not as important as a good U-value rating. While U-value is important when selecting a replacement window, it is not the most important factor when determining energy efficiency.

<b>2. You must use vinyl windows if you want replacement windows</b>
While vinyl is the most popular material used in replacement window frames today, there are other options for replacement windows. If you live in an older home you have the option of replacing your old wood windows with new, energy efficient clad/wood windows. These windows can often times be installed inside the “pocket” of your old windows without having to tear into the house or disturb the existing trim.

The windows have a clad exterior, usually vinyl or aluminum that protect the windows from the elements, and a wood interior to keep with the look of your existing windows. Fiberglass is a newer material available for replacement windows. It has thermal properties similar to wood window (wood is the best insulator available) and it is stronger than vinyl or aluminum. Fiberglass is very durable and is hard to dent or scratch.

The material is also paintable which gives you options other than the standard white and tan offered by most vinyl window manufacturers. You will pay more to have wood or fiberglass replacement windows. Vinyl is the least expensive of the three, but you also have product limitations, and quality issues with vinyl that you do not see as much in clad/wood or fiberglass replacement windows. You should always look at all of your options for replacement windows because vinyl is not the only choice.

<b>3. Replacing windows will require extensive renovation to your home</b>
Many people are hesitant to undertake a window replacement project because they are afraid that it will require tearing out brick, stucco, sheet rock and more to have the windows replaced. Usually this is not the case. Most good window installers can replace a window without disturbing the existing structure.

This is nice because it limits the amount of finish work required and it allows the project to be done fairly quickly. Most window installation projects are complete within two days and do not require any additional masonry, stucco, or sheet rock work. Find a window installer that is comfortable explaining their installation process to you so that you know what to expect when they start installing windows.

<b>4. Anyone can install a replacement window</b>
This, unfortunately, is the biggest misconception people have about installing replacement windows: anyone can do it. While it is not rocket science, installing windows is an acquired skill, and the better you are at it, the better the installation will be. There are many contractors out there that say they can install windows, but few that will say they can do it well.

It is important that you determine your window installers comfort level with installing replacement windows before you hire them to do the work. A window will only perform well if it was installed correctly. A poorly installed window can be difficult to open and close, it can leak, it can be drafty, just to name a few.

It is as important to find the right window installer as it is to find the right replacement window for your project. Take the time to find the right window installer and ask the right questions before they start the work. This will insure a well executed window replacement project and long term performance of your replacement windows.

How Windshield Repair Works

Just because you get a chip doesn’t mean you need to foot the cost of getting a new windshield. Why not do a windshield repair, which uses modern technology to quickly and efficiently repair the windshield, It’s a much more cost effective solution. Here’s how windshield repair works.

If you think about it, you’ll agree that ordinary house glass is pretty amazing. It’s strong, clear, and really quite affordable. Its only real drawback is that it is brittle so when it breaks it can create dangerous shards, making it a poor choice for automobile glass.

Plastic is safer, but it isn’t scratch resistant so it doesn’t remain clear enough for automobile glass. Auto manufacturers’ use tempered glass on the side windows which is much stronger than house glass and when it does break, it breaks into tiny little cubes that aren’t as dangerous as shards. They can still be sharp but they are far safer.

But tempered glass doesn’t work for windshields. Because the windshield is constantly being hit with tiny pebbles, sand, gravel, and other road debris, tempered glass would have a very short life span. So manufacturers started using laminated glass years ago.

Laminated glass is simply two thin sheets of tempered glass that are fused to a rubber inner layer. The two sheets are independent. What the rubber layer does is act like a sponge, absorbing the shock and reducing the chance of breakage from small particles like pebbles.

If a rock hits the window hard enough you’ll land up with a stone chip, but it usually only breaks the outer layer of glass. If something really big hits the window and shatters both layers, the rubber membrane will stop the windshield from falling in your lap. Windshield repair works for the rock chips that have damaged the outer layer of the glass.

Start by buying a windshield crack repair kit at Wal-Mart, Sears, Canadian Tire, Lordco or other department or auto stores. Once you’ve got your kit, dry the windshield to room temperature. Don’t bother trying to do the repair on a wet day unless you can park inside.

Use a hair dryer to dry the window. This will pull the moisture out of the window so that the repair works. If the windshield is dirty, clean it using a harsh cleaner such as lighter fluid. This will remove any grime or film.

The repair process is very straightforward. Peel the back of the adhesive strip and apply it to the pre-cleaned glass. Center it over the chip, then burnish with a blunt object. Peel away the remaining film. Line up the adapter so it’s as vertical as possible, and then stick it to the film. Again, burnish with a blunt object.

Take the cap off the syringe and attach it to the adapter. Pull the syringe out as far as it goes. Hold this position for one minute to create a vacuum. While you are holding the vacuum the air in the crack begins to bubble up in the syringe while at the same time the adhesive seeps deep into the glass and chip.

That’s it. Your chip is repaired. The adhesive is a type of resin that bonds with the chip and creates a seal, and thus a repair. You can also use the windshield repair kit on cracks. Once you’ve correctly done the repair, the glass will no longer spider and the damage won’t spread.

Remodeling Your House Through Windows and Throws

Everyone will be interested in making your house or living area look brand new. You may lack the finance needed to paint the walls or replace the fixtures. But windows and throws can give your home a new look. Windows and throws are great ways to give a bright, cool new look to a dull room. An elegant selection of windows and throws will complement and enhance home decor and provides beautiful and affordable home design. It probably makes more sense to begin remodeling the room you spend most of your time.

Exterior windows and doors are essential elements of every home, protecting it from the elements and the damage that sun, heat, cold, wind, and moisture can cause. There are different new technology windows available now-a-days. Some of them are bow/bay window, casement window, awning window, Marvin Windows, Double-Hung Windows, Fixed Windows, Etch-Designed Windows, storm windows, Round-Top Windows, Slider Windows, geometric window, Solar Windows, etc.

Using storm windows not only gives a new look but also helps your home stay insulated in winter and also gives protection against summer storms. Storm doors and windows add to the protection and energy efficiency of your home. They give your home added protection during wet, windy, and extreme weather. The type of glass, number of panes, and materials used in the design and manufacture of the storm windows and doors are of efficient quality.

They can also add aesthetic value to your home, providing great views of the outdoors and access to natural light. Innovative window system like the Boman Kemp Basement Window System allows natural light and ventilation to reach every corner of a basement.

The system includes a steel window frame that is mounted into the foundation, high quality double insulated vinyl basement windows, a large window well with attached ladder, a steel window well grate to allow foot and other traffic, and a plastic window well cover. Windows that have two layers of glass are best, ideally with argon gas between the layers.

A wide variety of window frames and window accessories and window treatments are also available. A range of high quality window decoration clings can be used to brighten the home, school, kinder, library or workplace. Window framing material makes the greatest difference in the cost of replacement windows. They are available from least to most expensive ones. The window framing material may be aluminum, vinyl and wood. Hand-painted faux leadlight window clings & sun-catchers are a great way to brighten your windows. Hand paint window clings/decals can be used to decorate windows.

Hand-woven throws add a level of comfort and brings rich beauty into your daily living room. The throws are very affordable, and hence can be changed more often. The choices range from different fabrics, styles, designs and colors. They are available in floral and stripes, and backgrounds of solid colors. The fabrics include silk, cotton, lace or velvet.

Adding a new color to your old windows or replacing your windows and throws with new models can give your room a completely new appearance. Changing your windows and throws is probably the easiest of any home decorating idea. New windows and throws give an elegant view to your home, lighten the home and add the look of grandeur and warmth from the outside and inside. Besides getting a creatively remodeled home, elegant windows and throws provide an aesthetic pleasure to you and your guests.

Moisture on Windows
Diagnosis:
It is difficult to completely eliminate moisture on existing windows. Inefficient windows (e.g., single pane with aluminum frames) or high moisture with inadequate ventilation can result in condensation, frost, or pools of water on windows and sills. Moisture in the air condenses when it touches a cold surface. (The same effect causes a glass of ice tea to “sweat” on a hot humid day.) Continued excess moisture can lead to mold, mildew, and deterioration of your windows and sills.
Prescription Checklist:

To reduce humidity levels in your home:

– Use ventilation fans in kitchens and baths to control moisture.
– Your clothes dryer should be vented directly to the outside. Inspect the vent duct. Make sure it is attached securely to the dryer. Check that it is clear of obstructions (e.g. lint). Check for holes that leak air. If vent duct is damaged replace it with a metal duct. The vent duct should be cleaned at least once a year. The Consumer Products Safety Commission additional safety tips for dryer vents .
– If you have single pane windows, especially with metal frames, install storm windows or consider replacing your existing windows with ENERGY STAR labeled windows.
– If you can’t afford to add storm windows or replace your windows now purchase and install a shrink film or polyethylene sheet, window insulation kit from a home center or hardware store.
– If you have a humidifier, check it regularly for proper operation. It could be adding too much moisture to your indoor air.
samehta is a Copywriter of <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.allphaserenovations.com/”>Houston home remodeling</a>.She written many articles in various topics such as <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://allphaserenovations.com/HoustonArticle/HouseRemodelingandgardenskitchens/tabid/134/Default.aspx”>Houston kitchen remodeling</a> .

The process of windshield chip repair reinforces the original factory seal, so your windshield remains strong and safe. Auto windshield repair professionals use a specialty resin that mimics the light reflecting properties and strength of glass, so your vision won’t be impaired. The risks of existing crack or enlarged chip is completely eliminated once your windshield chip is repaired.

Fiberglass Replacement Windows? Are They Really Your Best Choice?

Do you have broken windows and cannot choose which ones to replace them with? Or do simply want to give your house a face lift. Fiberglass replacement windows are the best option to suit any of your needs.

Fiberglass Replacement Windows are very durable as they are weather resistant, rust free, pest free and do not feel the affects of humidity. They also provide insulation, do not conduct heat or cold, reduce external noise when closed and last longer than vinyl

Unlike other types of windows that are made from various types of materials put together fiberglass is uniform and changes in temperature will lead to a change in the whole window. Moreover it also expands and contracts at the same rate of glass therefore greatly reducing the internal stress on the seals and not allowing moisture to get in.

Fiberglass also comes in a wide variety of colors making them very attractive and giving you the option to personalize them to suit your personality and tastes.

Your move to fiberglass can be completed quickly if you know how to measure and how to install them. Measuring is easy, all you need to do is expose the inside part of the window frame, measure the height and width. You can then order your new windows.

Once they arrive remove the old window completely including any nails that might be there. Then put the new windows into place, making sure it is level. Then nail them, and change the moldings around the inside and the outside. Finally paint them to the desired color.
